Pura Agua for Nicaragua

Last month I had the pleasure of co-leading a group of eight wonderful people to Nicaragua. Known as the land of lakes and volcanos, Nicaragua is the poorest country in Central America, it is still recovering from the Revolution of the 60s and 70s, as well as from the devastating earthquake in 1972 that leveled 90% of it’s capital city, Managua. We brought filters to two elementary schools and six private homes.

Although each of the schools have wells, the water is not fully potable. We were able to provide enough filters so that all the children now have easy access to clean water. So often we hear that they just don’t drink enough water because it doesn’t taste good. What a joy to see them drink clean water and actually enjoy it.

Even though there is a well on the school property, the water is not fully potable.

Ah, good clean water on a hot day!

I love the how eager of the children are to drink clean water.

I drank the water first to let them know it was ok to drink, then I offered it to the children. Once they tasted it, they couldn't drink enough!
One of the schools was undergoing renovation so the classes are temporarily being held outside. Even on a hot day, it was pleasantly cool.

I’m often asked if I am fluent in Spanish. I can certainly make my way around a Spanish speaking country but I do not have all the vocabulary to explain how the filters work and how to assembly them so I work with interpreters. Ken G. and Michelle were great to work with and by listening to them, I was able to pick up some new words.
The private homes we visited are some of the parents of the children that attend the schools we called on in the morning. Each time we go to Nicaragua, we expand the number of private homes so that the children, who are already familiar with the filters from school, can help other family members learn how to use the filters.  Over time, our intention is to equip the entire community with filters so everyone has easy access to clean water.

Bringing Clean Water To Tulum, Mexico

Many do not realize that just a few miles from the luxury resorts of Tulum, there are communities the either do not have easy access to clean water or have to pay for any clean water that is needed.

I am part of a global group of women, The Waterbearers, who are committed to bring clean water to those who do not have it.  Many of you may remember the fundraiser from March where I raised money to purchase water filters.  Each filter costs $50 and is capable of providing clean water for 100 people for up to 10 years!  It is an incredible piece of low technology that is working around the world.

This past month, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Tulum, Mexico to deliver water filters and to help educate how they are used.

We went to two places:  the first stop was to an elementary school where we had 20 minutes to share that drinking water is far healthier that the heavily-sugared water they are used to drinking.

This is what the children are used to drinking; vendors are allowed on school grounds to sell this during recess and lunch.

We decided that we would communicate our message via a skit and a song. The skit was about a woman superhero coming to clean the rivers and to clean the drinking water to make it safe to drink.

And we taught them a song about the importance of drinking water. The kids were very friendly and eager to interact with us and were eager to see how the filters worked.

The second place we visited was a remote Mayan village about an hour and a half from Tulum in the jungle.  About 30 villagers, mostly women, came to learn about the water filters

We first demonstrated to the group how to put the filter together (photo 3820), then we taught each household head individually.

This woman and her son, caught on quickly and were instrumental in helping teach the others.

It was so very heartwarming to see their faces when they realized that they no longer had to pay for water.  They even asked for an additional filter that could be used in the local medical clinic.

This is the first of what I plan to be many global humanitarian trips with The Waterbearers.  As I know more I will share more.

I am so pleased to announce that Act As One has partnered with thewaterbearers.org to bring clean water to one million people within a 30 day period starting today and ending on March 22. One filter, that costs $50, will give 100 people clean water for up to a decade! This is an ambitious and exciting global challenge that I am so elated to be a part of. Please go to my fundraiser page to take part in this exceptional event. Thank you in advance for any contribution you may be able to make!

Every day women around the world walk millions of miles just to collect the water they need to live. Most of us just walk to the faucet.

I, along with a few of my sister Team Leaders, have been speaking to as many groups as possible encouraging others to be a part of a global campaign to bring clean water to those who do not have it. I invite you to join us by donating $50 which will provide a filter that will bring clean water to 100 people for up to 10 years. For those who may not have the means to contribute $50, know that 100% for all donations go to purchasing water so every dollar makes a difference. I invite you to give what you can. This is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of many that will last for many years. Thank you!
